Most popular Pilgrimage in India-Vaishno Devi

September 23, 2010

“Aage bolo ….. Jai Mata Di ….. Peeche bolo ….. Jai Mata Di ….. Jai Mata Di ….. Jai Mata Di”. This holy wordings has a great effect which often helps a devotee to cover the long and arduous trek to the Mata Vaishno Devi Temple.

Mata Vaishno Devi Temple is one of the oldest Hindu Shrines of India and a pilgrimage to this Shrine is held to be the mother of all pilgrimages. The Vaishno Devi yatra is probably the most hallowed pilgrimage of Northern India and attracts over five million devotees a year. It is visited by lakhs of pilgrims every year, irrespective of religion, caste and creed. Vaishnodevi temple is extremely popular to the people of all faiths. The route up to the Vaishnodevi shrine consists of both tiled paths as well as steep staircases, and the devout often walk barefeet up the Trikuta mountain.

Katra is the place where you will have to stay if you wish to go to Vaishno devi temple. From here they climb up a paved track – 3 km uphill and then 3 km downhill – to reach the holy cave or Bhavan where the goddesses’ idol is housed. There is another original track which is much more steep and difficult. A few pilgrims even opt to climb that, but the majority use the new track. The entire arrangements are organized by the Vaishnodevi Shrine Board and there are ashrams, restrooms, toilets, medical facilities, prasad shops and souvenir shops. An unfortunate, but necessary, recent development.
